Importance of Diaphragmatic Breathing

What is diaphragmatic breathing?

Diaphragmatic breathing is essentially deep breathing (belly breathing), using your diaphragm muscle. When you use your diaphragm muscle to breathe, it is the most efficient way of breathing and requires less work from your body than upper chest breathing.

Why is diaphragmatic breathing important?

Your diaphragm muscle plays a key role in core stabilization, which is useful to all people in everyday activities. Using your diaphragm helps your body work more efficiently.  The stronger your diaphragm becomes, the less strain you put on your body and more energy you have reserved to focus on other system functions.

What else does diaphragmatic breathing help?

Diaphragmatic breathing improves the vagus nerve functioning. The vagus nerve runs from your brainstem to your abdomen and innervates your heart, lungs, and digestive tract. The vagus nerve connects with the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which controls calming your body down. The vagus nerve is important for reducing anger, stress, and anxiety.

Diaphragmatic breathing also helps our respiratory systems become more efficient, stimulate relaxation and relieve pain, tone core muscles, and improves posture.

Just one simple change in your breathing can bring a multitude of health benefits!
